RockBox http://www.rockbox.org   Leave a comment

At the risk of offending someone, I have to say I’ve installed Rock Box on an older iPod, and it works GREAT. Lots of features, I tried a few of the games…. But I just don’t get it. I am actually pretty happy with iTunes – it keeps track of what I have listened to. I have a playlist called “Unheard podcasts” that I listen to the most. The other playlist I use the most is “Unheard anything”. So, hats off to a great product (RockBox) but I am still using the default iPod interface & iTunes. Sorry!

Sandboxie http://www.sandboxie.com

I have been using a program called Sandboxie (http://www.sandboxie.com) and would like to recommend that you at least try it

Basically, what it does is make a copy of the stuff that usually gets written to when you do certain things (beyond internet explorer, but let’s just consider internet explorer for now) and then redirect writes/reads to that copy.  When you get done, it just throws away all these modified files and leaves the original files intact.

From their website:

Tired of dealing with rogue software, spyware and malware?

Spent too many hours removing unsolicited software?

Worried about clicking unfamiliar Web links?

Introducing Sandboxie

Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox

Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.
Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don’t leak into Windows.
Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can’t break out of the sandbox and can’t infect your real system.
Windows Stays Lean: Prevent wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software into an isolated sandbox.

Windows Vista, XP and Online Video sites

I managed to completely trash my Windows Vista installation – it says not enough memory, and Internet Explorer crashes as soon as it loads.

So, copied my documents (which includes itunes library) over to the XP partition, rebooted to XP and had to do a number of updates. iTunes is all set, including Audible, and, yes it runs faster.

Orb = https://mycast.orb.com/orb/html/login.html

Miro = http://www.getmiro.com/download/windows.php

I had to invest in a copy of Vista Boot Pro (http://www.vistabootpro.org) to set the default boot. So, why is this Vista MBR manager better than boot.ini which I could edit with any text editor?? NOT complaining about Vista Boot Pro, complaining about VISTA.

Other video sites -> http://zattoo.com

www.viddler.com – I probably can’t do the description justice, but it’s kind of like www.youtube.com, but not quite. In addition, it allows tagging of the video. I don’t think I can do the description justice, so perhaps you should take a look at it, or listen to Leo and Amber talk about it at http://twit.tv/natn44

http://www.hulu.com – Watch TV shows, etc, but this is an official site, with good video quality. Not public yet. From http://www.hulu.com/splash/about.html, “Hulu’s ambitious and never-ending mission is to help you find and enjoy the world’s premium content when, where and how you want it.”

http://animoto.com/ Kind of hard to explain, but you take music and photos, it analyzes tempo and stuff like that, and makes a mini “movie” or like a music video from it.

(Yes, this is a mash of previous posts)

http://www.alberteisenhower.com

Well, since my last good idea for a domain name is now for sale somewhere, and I won’t tell you because I don’t want to promote “cyber squatting”, I finally came up with another name.

I heard a comedian once say that someone was “a real Albert Eisenhower” (ie, not too bright). So, I registered it today. For now, all it does is forward to here, and maybe that’s all I will ever do, but what the heck. Only $10.

So, here you go: http://www.alberteisenhower.com
