Free information

Wasn’t sure what to call this post, but I stumbled across something I used to use a lot:

www.realtimepublishers.com

Pretty cool site, because the documentation is recent and diverse. If you really wanted to, you could effectively write your own book. I also noticed that they now have podcasts such as:

Backing up files

Scenario – SQL Server backs up data files every night at 11 pm to the D drive, and at 2 am these are copied to a backup device (shows up as E drive). This backup device uses 3 cartridges that are swapped every night.

Problem – how to keep backup device from filling up with too many backups (each is about 1/2 gig and the cartridges hold about 40 gig.)

Solution – Since there are 3 cartridges, I created a batch file to delete the backup files from the D drive every 4 days at 10 pm. I then created a batch file to delete the backups from the cartridges every 7 days.

OpenDNS and DNS in general

I’ve had some issues with my network at home, and finally switched my DNS settings to OpenDNS instead of my Internet service provider (Roadrunner, but I wouldn’t blame them)… Now things are much better. Here’s instructions:

Here’s a link to check to see if you are at risk from the DNS flaw that was recently revealed:
(note – this link doesn’t work from inside some company firewalls)

Command line recycling bin

Found this http://www.maddogsw.com/cmdutils/cmdutils.zip

There’s a command in there (recycle) which sends stuff from your command line to the recycling bin, so that it isn’t just deleted. Nice for batch files. Again, I need to spend more time with it.

Windows "mesh"

I have been spending some time with Microsoft’s www.mesh.com aka windows live mesh. Pretty cool, allowing me to synch between 2 PC’s and a virtual desktop out on the internet. I need to spend more time with it, but I also realize I haven’t posted in a while.

Also allows remote control of your desktops.
